Frequently Asked Questions FAQ

Why is my tax refund (return) different from others with similar incomes?

Canadian tax law (CRA) applies equally to everyone, but no two tax profiles are identical. Your refund depends on multiple personal variables beyond just your salary (T4). Factors such as your deductions (medical expenses, donations, RRSP), your marital status, the number of dependents, and the specific tax withholdings your employer made during the year, all make each result unique. Our goal is to analyze your particular case to ensure you receive all the benefits you are legally entitled to.

I haven’t been in Canada for long, or my income was very low this year. Do I still need to file a return?

Yes, it is highly recommended. Even if your income was minimal or zero, filing your tax return is the only way to access government benefits such as the GST/HST Credit (tax-free quarterly payments) and child benefits (CCB), if applicable. In addition, you will start building your tax history in the country and accumulate contribution room for your retirement savings (RRSP).

I am Self-Employed and get paid without deductions. How do I handle my taxes?

As a self-employed worker, you are responsible for setting aside and paying your own taxes to the CRA. The great advantage is that you can deduct numerous operational expenses related to your work (tools, a portion of vehicle use, phone, etc.) to lower your final tax burden. It is vital to keep an organized record of your invoices and receipts. At CM&A Tax Services, we have extensive experience structuring these types of returns to maximize your allowable deductions.

What happens if I lost my T4 slip or my employer hasn’t given it to me?

Employers have until the end of February to issue T4s. If March arrives and you still don’t have it, or if you lost one from a previous job, there’s no need to delay your process. As authorized representatives with the CRA, we can access your portal and directly download the digital copy of the slips your employers have reported to the government.

I think there is a mistake in my previous years’ returns, or I have missing documents. Will I be fined?

Don’t worry; most of these situations can be fixed. We can file an “Adjustment Request” (T1-ADJ) to correct errors or omissions from past years. It is always preferable to proactively correct any discrepancies before the CRA initiates a review. You just need to provide us with your previous Notice of Assessment and the missing documents, and we will take care of updating your file securely.
